Genuinely contested — Pontzer's data show the body partly compensates for heavy exercise by burning less elsewhere (~30% offset), but two 2025-26 studies (Howard, Yegian) found total energy expenditure rises roughly linearly with activity and no real 'constraint', so the strong version isn't settled.

Compensation WAS found, but at other endpoints — SMR −105 ± 174 and RMR −87 ± 118 kcal/day below prediction, MVPA +15 vs 28 min expected, walking economy improved, liver −3.8% and kidney −5.1% volume, and weight loss 89-96% below model prediction (−0.2 ± 1.9 kg, NS). Whole-cohort exercise-induced energy compensation was 39 ± 116% of ExEE (11/16 compensated, 5 did not; 8205 ± 20,282 kcal). Authors call the constrained-model interpretation 'speculative' and note the 20 kcal/kg/wk dose in previously sedentary adults may sit below the threshold at which TDEE becomes constrained. |
