Gut & Microbiome
Does a gut fibre by-product make you burn more fat?
The claim, precisely: colonic propionate increases fat oxidation
Yes in human trials, but the cleanest studies used a delivered form, so fibre-derived amounts are less certain.
Evidence ladder
How far up the ladder this claim has climbed. A high consensus on a low rung means "consistent so far," not "proven in people."
Top evidence so far: Human trials (RCT / n-of-1)
How the studies fall
What the evidence shows
Colonic propionate raises whole-body resting fat oxidation and (via PYY/GLP-1) cuts energy intake & prevents fat gain in humans. NOTE: cleanest data use inulin-propionate ESTER, which bypasses the microbiome — only indirect support that RS-derived SCFA does the same.
